Backup exec 2010 R3 (v13) / Error 1406. Could not write value Major Version - during upgrade to SP4

Oui, j'ai besoin d'une solution

I'm trying to upgrade the current version of Backup Exec 2010 R3 V13 with SP4 however something is not going as expected.

There are a couple of topics on this issue that claim by simply changing the permission in the register will solve this - however this is NOT the case.

Similar: https://support.symantec.com/en_US/article.TECH66119.html

Registry permission have been set for:

HKLM\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\13.0\Install
HKLM\Software\Symantec\Backup Exec For Windows\Backup Exec\13.0

System, administrator, administrators and I've even added the domain admins, all have full control
After this I've added the Everyone group which did not help.
I have removed the Major Version DWord and recreated it which did not help.

I cannot ignore this action otherwise the setup will roll back.
I tried to install the service pack 'run as administrator'

This is very very frustrating, how is it possible that there is no clear solution to this.

Renaming backup media

Oui, j'ai besoin d'une solution

So I got myself in a tangle with our backup media, and I want to get everything straightened out.

I have a stack of old LTO5 tapes sitting next to me, and I want to use these in my new 2014 environment for which the tape drive is arriving soon. These old tapes are for the old 2010 environment and they are already labelled, but not contiguously which is making matters confusing. I want nice blocks of tapes for our weeklies and daily backups.

How should I best rename the tapes in the new environment? Also can the new labels be placed over the old ones or should I take the labels off first?

BACKUP EXEC 15: RD 1000 Tape Drive Detected as External Removable Storage

Hi,

I have 2 Backup Exec Servers.

Same OS (WIndows Server 2012 Standard)

Same Tape Drive and driver (Dell Powervault RD 1000)

Both OS Detect the Tape drive in device manager

RD1000.JPG

But on the server with BE 15 installed, it is detected as an external storage device and therefore, not detected inside BE.

RD 1000 external.JPG

I have uninstalled/reinstalled the driver and rebooted the server. It is still detected as a removable storage so BE cannot see it.

I know this is leaning towards an issue with the drive. But has anyone else experienced this?

Removing Expired Backup Sets That Were Written To Tape

Oui, j'ai besoin d'une solution

I recently upgraded our media servers (running Windows 2008 R2 OS) from BE2012 to BE15.

When I look at the backup sets, I see a long list of expired backup sets where the "Storage" column is identified as "Unknown."  Looking at the Properties for any one of them, I see that the backup set is encrypted which tells me the backup set was written to tape (we only encrypt backup sets when running a duplicate-to-tape job.)

My question is:  These backup sets were written first to disk then duplicated, with encryption, to tape and are now expired, why are they not being deleted from the BE database?  I looked at the dates on the backup sets and they go as far back as November 2013.  We do an annual backup set D2D2T that we retain for 1-year.  Upon creating a new annual set, the previously year's set is replaced.   How do I get rid of them?

Any help is great appreciated!

Migrate the database from SQL 2005 to 2008R2

Hi,

I am pretty new to Symantec backup EXEC 2014.

I have a SQL Server 2005 instance on my PROD server. I have been given a task to migrate databases from that instance to a different box (SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows 2008 R2). The current instance has over 8 database which backs up  every night.

is there something called .BAK file that it creates while backing up the database? i am tyring to find one but wasnt able to. i was told that it doenst create the .BAK file using Symantec tool.

Now where do i go to find the file thats been backed up and restore it onto the new SQL Server 2008 R2 instance?

What is the best approach to migrate all databases in single shot from SQL server 2005 to 2008R2

SQL1 is the SQL server 2005 Service pack 2

SQL 2 is the SQL server 2008R2 service pack 1.

I would apprecaiate if you could advice, me how to do upgrade or migration using Symantec backup EXEC 2014.

Hi,

I upgraded from 2014 to 15 and seemed to go well...just an odbc error about the catalogs and I just conducted a catrebuildindex -r to see if that fixes it.  Other than that, can someone explain what the .prev file extension in the catalogs folder is for?  Is it for retention?

B.Exec 2012 clean install...can't run a job

Oui, j'ai besoin d'une solution

We have B.Exec 2012 installed on our network.

I decided to test SDR, so I installed it on a Windows 2008 R2 stand-alone server  [2012 - Version 14 Rev 1798 (64-bit) ].  My storage device is a USB external. I started a Full backup of the media server. And it wrote about 12 GB to the BEData folder. As it was still a job in process, I was looking at some config settings and the prog file hung. Regrettably, I had to hard boot the server.

Here is my question

I re-run the same job and it stays in queued status. I cancel job.

I delete the job and create a new Full and that job stays in queued status. I cancel job.

I stop/start all services and  job stays in a queued status. I cancel job.

I reboot and create a tiny job to back-up and job stays in queued status.

Any ideas to get past this so I can start testing SDR?

Symantec Backup Exec 15 & Oracle 11G on the same server

Oui, j'ai besoin d'une solution

Hi.

I plan to get one (1) server with 30+ drives to run my Oracle Database & Backup Exec 15 applications.

For sure this is not the best practice but I force to deploy this set-up as of the moment.

Questions:

1. Can I install  Symantec BE 15 & Oracle 11G R2 on the same server? And do backups on my Oracle Database?

2. Will I be able to do backups on my Oracle Database to my Tape Library which directly attached to the sever via SAS?

3. As I understand I will just need the following licenses:

   - 1x Agent for application & database

   - 1x Symantec Backup Exec 15

4. Are there other things I should consider?

Thanks,

Paul

HI,

I'm trying to find what could be triggering the above error in Backup Exec 2010.

It happens when we backup a local server and to a USB removal Hard drive.

Backup2Disk has been set to split the backup files in to 50GB due to performance issue, error seems to happan after the first 50-70GB error seems to happen arround these sizes of the backup.

Thanks

Dan.

Backup Exec 2012 Backups stuck on running randomly

Hi,

We have a Server 2008 R2 server that is used for backups. We use Backup Exec 2012 and backup various servers. It is patched to the latest version.

Now and again some jobs will be stuck on running at 0MB byte rate. The way I get around this is to reboot the server and the jobs then run ok.

Does anybody have any ideas to resolve the problem?

Set Chrome as default browser for links in job logs

I've noticed an odd behavior in Backup Exec that's been around for quite awhile. I seem to remeber this as an issue with BE2010 and 2012.

I have Chrome installed on my Backup Exec server, and it's set as the default browser... however, when I click on a link to a tech note link inside the job log it opens up in Internet Explorer.

This is really more of an annoyance rather than a real issue, but I'd like to find a way to fix it.

Thanks

BE 2014 Expired Backup Sets not deleting

Oui, j'ai besoin d'une solution

Hi, I am experiencing issues with our BE 2014 after recently updating to SP2 and the most recent hotfix.  The backup sets that I am manually expiring are not deleting from the disk storage that it is associated with.  I have tried reading through numerous forum posts and having tried the fixes that were recommended, but the expired set are still present.  Backups are created to the local disk on the server and it is now at full capacity and new backups cannot be created.  Any help would be appreciated.

The following configuration was already set:

Backup Exec button > Configuration and Settings > Backup Exec Settings > Storage > Allow Backup Exec to delete all expired backup sets.

How to set up incremental/differential backups with alternating sets of removable media?

$

Oui, j'ai besoin d'une solution

I have some questions about best practices and how incremental backups work with removable media.

So we have a total of four USB HDDs. These are split into two pools, "Drive Pool A" and "Drive Pool B". At the end of each day, one of our employees is responsible for taking home both the disks from one pool. The next day he plugs those disks back in and removes the disks from the other pool and takes those home.

My question is how should I set this up with differential or incremental backups?

I can provide more info if required. Thanks.
