Upgrading to BUE 15 from 10d... Catalog files not working

So...

We are upgrading from BUE 10d and attempting to make 15 work.  

We have 10d installed on a 2003 server, while 15 is on a 2008.  I have already learned the hard way that BUE 15 doesn't really like the old 10d catalog files.  

We have also figured out that we need to take steps to upgrade the BUE in steps to make the program run "smoothly".

My question is...

When we upgrade to 12, then to 2010 R3, do we need to inventory and catalog the tapes, or will the catalog files read and transfer nice like?

We got the BUE 15 to find the old catalog files, but they are just folders with nothing in them, as 15 sees it.

If we step up in increments, will our old catalog files be readable without any additional (horribly painful) steps?  We have hundreds of tapes, so manually cataloging each isn't something we really want to do...  at all...

Exchange agent needed for vmware vm recovery

We perform VMware ESXi 5.5 VM full backups nightly. Is the BackupExec Exchange Server Agent required when only restoring or cloning an entire VM (without intent to ever use GRT to recover Exchange databases)? In other words does Symantecs VSS quiesce Exchange for the vmdk backup?

We have moved a physical Exchange server to a VM which was previously backed up by another product. Symantec no longer sells the Exchange Agent for our version of BackupExec. We're OK losing any Exchange activity since the last full backup. Just wanting to know if the database is stable at the time of the snapshot occurs via VSS.

Backup Exec 2012 hangs with USB harddisk and state Active

Problem:

An USB harddisk is getting spontaneously a status "Offline" according to the messages from Backup Exec en Windows application Log.

Within 1 min (!) the USB disk is getting again spontaneously a status “OK” according to the Backup Exec but has in the same time state “Active” and no backups are possible anymore. Backup Exec 2012 hangs and also the administrator is getting no messages about failing of the backup.

Only killing of Backup Exec Engine service which is hanging and stopping/restarting afterwards all rest of the services of Backup Exec can resolve the problem of  hanging of Backup Exec.

How to avoid this problem? It happens very often.

Status of differentials after a Full backup failure.

Hi :

  I have a situation where full backups sometimes fail due to a problem mounting shadow copy volume. The differential backups that follow are always successful.  My question is, "are the differentials relative to the last successfull  full backup (and therefore good) or are they relative to the recent failed full backup (and therefore not useful for restore)?"

missing some bfk files - restore with some missing still?

i need to restore a full back up (we got hit with crypto) and its missing a bunch of the bkf files, it somehow got switched to delete after 4 weeks and my fault for not catching it. is there anyway to extract whatever bfk files i  have somehow? i know there will be lost data, but some data is better than no data. windows sbs2008  backupexec 2010 r3.4

Used Capacity vs Data (Backup exec 2010 R3)

Hi support, 

I'm just confused the difference between "used capacity vs data" . I used LTO4 ( 820m, 800 GB).

here's my scenarion. for example: My used capacity  has  396.9GB out of 745.1 GB(total capacity of tape)  and the Data  also 497.36 GB.

Used Capacity:

745.1 GB - 396.9 GB = 348.2 GB ( remaining space out of 745.1 GB)

Data:

6/22/15 - SUN-SETA ( Full Server Backup) = 257 GB

7/6/15 - SUN-SETA ( Full Server Backup) = 239 GB

Total of Data = 497.36 GB 

My question is, if my next backup consumed only 300 GB, it could be possible to reach the space out of  745.1 GB without prompted error? ( see the attached image for further reference) .

 And also an you give me a clear explanation between the two? 

Your suggestion or comment  would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. More Power!

BackupExec v11 open .iv21 file

I have installed BackupExec2013 in a Win7 computer, so I run the back up and got the following files:

MINACO2-SCADA.sv2i

MINACO2-SCADA_C_Drive002_i001i.v2i

MINACO2-SCADA_D_Drive002_i001.iv2i

MINACO2-SCADA_System Reserved0-1_Drive002_i001.iv2i

Some time after I reinstalled Win7 in the same computer and tried to open the backup files I had but I can´t have my

files back but I get the following errors:

"Error ED80002A: No se pudo abrir el archivo de punto de recuperacion principal 'C:\Users\...\MINACO2-SCADA_C_Drive002.v2i'.

"Error ED800018: No se puede enocontras el punto de recuperación 'C:\Users\...\MINACO2-SCADA_C_drive002.v2i'

So I guess is looking for a .v2i file I don´t have.

How can I get my info back!???

i got confused,that do i create one media set (include 6 tapes to same) or 6 media sets (one tape each)

how do i set OPP and APU so that i manage media effectivly.

BE 15 having issues running 2 jobs at once

Dedicated BE server dual processor xeons quad core with 20 gigs of ram. LTO 5 Super Loader 3 and md1000 raid with 3TB storage. Server 2008 Standard. My backup system has been rock stable for about 2 year now without issue. I have 20 jobs, 12 are tape jobs and 8 are to b2d in case of the need for quick restore. I upgraded my system to 15 July 3rd and came back on monday to The raid full and the backupexec manager service shutdown. For some reason the backup job on the media server decided to backup the raid (to itself) even though I have that drive specifically exempt. I  chalked this up to me not going through each job to verify the job settings though after doing this all settings were as they were supposed to be.  

During the week the jobs locked up alltogether. 2 jobs, 1 backing up my fp server to tape and the other b2d of one of my utility servers had basically stalled after backing up 50 and 30 gigs. Job log lists backing up, time is still counting up but no active file or directory is listed in the job log and both the raid and the tape drive are idle. I installed the new update on thursday and pushed out the new agents to see if this was perhaps an issue that was fixed but had the same problem thursday night. Friday I decided to try splitting up the jobs. Put all the b2d jobs on hold and Everything ran as expected. I was actually surprised that the new update appeared to shave about 6 hours off my tape jobs. Removed hold one the b2d jobs and they ran as expected.​

This leads me to believe that the issue has to do with running 2 jobs at the same time which 2014 did not have an issue with.

Incorrect protected time of tape

The days to keep of the tape data are set to 2 weeks in media set options. We can see the protected time of tapes used today is correct. But for the tape used in June, which was swapped and now insert into autoloader for reuse, the protected time was changed to 4 weeks and we have to move it to scratch media set for reuse. Any idea why the protected time of tape which was re-inserted to autoloader will changed to 4 weeks? Thanks

Newbie to BE 2014: Backup (3 Servers) to (Day's Dedicated Tape)?

I'm pretty new to BE 2014, and I need a detailed instructions to achieve this configuration:

  • AD Server
  • Exchange Server
  • BE Server: BE 2014 (14.1) 64 bit installed on Windows Server 2008 R2 standard x64:
  • HP LTO-6 attached to BE Server
  • 6 LTO-6 tapes

Backup strategy:

AD Server:

  • Full: every 2 weeks (tuesday)
  • Incremental: every day except the weekend

EX Server:

  • Full: every week (wednesday)
  • Incremental: every day except the weekend

BE Server:

  • Full: 1st monday every month

If a tape is full I want BE to delete old backups automatically without asking me.

I've already added my LTO drive as a storage.

How to create jobs and schedules as described and how to make BE recognize the 6 tapes for each day?

Please I need detailed instructions.

If these strategy is not recommended please suggest the recommended one.

Does Backup Exec 2015 V-Ray License have to be installed directly on the Hyper-V host server?

Hi All,

Quick question - looking at Backup Exec 2015 V-Ray to backup a single host at a client site with multiple VMs (Windows and Linux).

For obvious reasons I'd prefer to install Backup Exec on a separate backup server rather than directly on the Hyper-V host so that in the event of a failure the VMs can be restored quickly once the Hypervisor hardware is replaced.

I can't find a definitive "Yes" as to whether all I would need is the standard (8 cores or more in this case) V-Ray license in order for this configuration to be licensed correctly.

Is the single V-Ray all I'd need or do I require additional licensing (I don't particularly need to backup the Backup server itself)?

New tape library

We have purchased a new Tape Library (Dell Powervault)

What sequence should be used in terms of:
- plugging in the tape device to the BExec media server
- installing tape device drivers
- installing medium changer.

To expound, Dell says we should turn off media server (Win 2008) before plugging
any cables in. We need to install a new SAS card anyway.

So,
1. Should we install any drivers prior to shutting down or would that be moot since the media server won't detect the tape device until it is plugged in?

2. If the tapeint.exe installs the tape device driver, then where is the "medium changer" driver sourced from?
(I see tech12480 where it says to choose "unknown medium changer".)

Upgrade Backup Exec from Version 14.1 to 14.2

I am a newbie.

Backup Exec 14.1 is running fine.

I am trying to upgrade it to version 14.2 (Backup Exec 15). I am encountering problems at the initial stage where the Environment check is conducted.

Error

Backup Exec SQL Upgrade Check - Failed

I have checked the software compatibility list and SQL 2008 R2 is certainly on the list.

I fail to understand why the checks are failing.

LTO-5 Barcode labels specific to tape manufacturer ?

Hi Dumb question:

If I want to order lto-5 bar code labels, do they have to be specific to the tape manufacturer I am using ? eg order quantum label for quantumtapes or HP labels for HP tapes or are they generic ?
