BE 2012: why when tape drive powered off, wont' come online?

Oui, j'ai besoin d'une solution

I"m not sure how many members of this forum have experience with operating single-server/singe-tape drive setups but as this is a Dell server, using a Dell LTO5 drive,I have to hpoe this is extremely common.

A user today accidently powered off the tape drive instead of hitting eject.  He realizes his mistake, powered it on, tape drive is powered on and all green.

However BE can never recognize this.  If I right-click the drive and take the checkmark off of Offline, that makes no difference.

In the past hte only solut8ion has ever been to reboot the server, but I have to think that SAS-attached tape drives have better smart etchnology than that?

I am using the BE-suplied driver, and I recognize this could be something happening in Windows but this setup is about as generic and ubiquitous as they come so I hope it's something easily addressable.  Or am I stuck rebooting the server every time the drive loses power?

Thanks!
